A Personal Journey, Shared by an Entire Industry
Like so many in this industry, I was trained to be technically strong but not necessarily prepared for everything that happens in a real consultation.
I built my career in the hair and barbering industry the way most of us do, refining my craft, developing technical skills, and doing the best I could with the training I had.
But when it came to real client consultations…
Something was missing.
A gap between knowing what to do technically and knowing how to guide a client with confidence and clarity.
Over time, through years of working with clients and later stepping into education, I realized this wasn’t just my experience.
It was happening across the industry.
We were trained in technique, but not in real client consultation
For generations, hairdressers and barbers have been trained to master their craft.
We learn how to cut, colour, shape, and transform — and rightly so.
Technical skill is the foundation of everything we do.
But what so many of us were never truly taught…
was how to consult, communicate, and guide a client with clarity and confidence.
And that gap doesn’t show up in the classroom.
It shows up on the floor.
I know this because I lived it.
Like so many in our industry, I stepped into real client-facing work feeling technically prepared but not fully equipped for what actually happens in a consultation.
The conversations.
The uncertainty.
The pressure to “get it right.”
Learning how to navigate that didn’t come from my training…
It came from years of trial and error.
Years of second-guessing.
Years of missed opportunities.
Years of slowly building confidence the hard way.
Over time, that gap costs more than we realize.
Confidence.
Clients.
Consistency.
And often… growth.
The challenge wasn’t technical ability
It was stepping onto the floor without knowing how to lead the conversation
As I grew into my role as an educator, I started to see the same patterns in my students.
They were capable.
They were skilled.
But when it came to consultation, they hesitated.
I went looking for better ways to teach it.
Better ways to prepare them.
Something that connected technical skill with real client interaction.
But what I was searching for… wasn’t there in a structured, teachable way.
And that’s where everything changed.
Because I realized this wasn’t just about technique—it was about how we understand and guide people.
What I experienced wasn’t unique—it was being repeated in every classroom, with every new group of students
The more I looked, the clearer it became.
The challenge wasn’t that people didn’t know what to do.
It was that they weren’t being taught how to think in a consultation.
How to interpret.
How to guide.
How to lead.
And without that…
Even highly skilled professionals can feel uncertain.
Conversations feel harder than they need to be.
Outcomes become inconsistent.
Not because of ability...
But because of what was never built into the training.
Consultation wasn’t failing because of technique — it was never being taught as a way of thinking and guiding
I didn’t set out to create a system.
I set out to make sure my students didn’t have to go through what I did.
Over time, this work became something more structured, something I could teach, refine, and share.
A way to bring clarity to something that had always been instinctive.
And to make consultation something that could actually be taught, not just learned through experience.
This is what I started to see happen:
Conversations became clearer
Confidence started to build naturally
Educators became more aligned in how they taught
Students felt more prepared stepping onto the floor
Client interactions became more consistent
And outcomes improved—not by chance, but by design
And through all of that, something shifted.
Not just in results—but in how people experienced their role.
“Finally, I was able to give my students what had taken me years to figure out on my own.”
